She would describe herself as reasonable and open minded, but can have difficulty accepting differences in cultural values.
Despite her limited ability for accurate self-reflection, at times Nynaeve often shows surprising insight on the surrounding situations, seeing what others do not. Nynaeve may not have been initially "wise" when named the village Wisdom, but there is no doubt she possesses an inherently sharp and capable mind.
She is fiercely devoted to Lan, who is the one person able to melt her tempered exterior and gain some control over her. However, throughout her travels, Nynaeve does end up gaining a degree of self-awareness, and manages to gain a greater measure of control over her temper without sacrificing her passion. She also ends up becoming more comfortable with who she is, and more or less abandons wanting to achieve the typical cold, aloof demeanor of most Aes Sedai. Notably, she is also one of very, very few Aes Sedai to come to the realization that the White Tower as an establishment is rife with hypocrisy and self-centerdness.
Dream for things I no longer can. Nynaeve al'Meara is one of the most powerful female channelers in this Age. She has been known to match the Forsaken Moghedien in raw strength of the One Power in The Shadow Rising , without having even reached her full potential. Since then likely having reached her potential, she is probably of average Forsaken strength with saidar , most likely matching Mesaana and possibly Graendal. She would thus have been considered very strong in the One Power even during the Age of Legends.
Of the channelers of the Light, her strength is only explicitly surpassed by one known female channelers: Alivia , a former damane , now allied with the Dragon Reborn, while Sharina , a newly arrived grandmother novice , has the potential to surpass Nynaeve; it is also suggested that a young Windfinder apprentice named Talaan , who now matches Nynaeve's strength, could surpass her, given a little more training and experience. Of the current Aes Sedai, Nynaeve is by far the strongest, with a considerable margin over Egwene, Elayne and Cadsuane, that are many levels below her.
As a wilder , she learned how to channel by instinct, giving rise to a style of Healing unknown to any living Aes Sedai. However, channeling without knowing she was accessing the One Power left her with a block that prevented her from channeling, or even sensing the True Source, without being very angry. Even after overcoming her block, she still showed signs of little to no refinement e. This is due to her relative lack of formal training, consequently requiring her to learn almost everything on her own.
Nonetheless, Nynaeve develops into an incredibly quick learner, able to emulate and memorize highly complex weaves after just seeing them once or twice. Despite her initial obstacles with the One Power, Nynaeve is and has always been an exceptional Healer. Rediscovering the technique of healing using all of the Five Powers , a technique long forgotten in this age, her ability with Healing is only matched by Sumeko , one of the Kin , and possibly by the Asha'man Damer Flinn among male channelers.
Due to her exceptional talent and her stubborn determination she finds a way to heal Severing , a feat not thought to be possible even during the Age of Legends. Nynaeve Delves the Asha'man Naeff who was suffering from the effects of the Dark One 's taint on saidin. She sees the taint as a black mass that had extended thorn-like projections into the mind. She plucks each of these projections free and dissolves the mass thereby discovering the means to Heal a man who can channel of his madness.
Nynaeve has also developed a method to identify and undo a weave of Compulsion on a person's mind. Nynaeve is able to channel the Five Powers of Air, Fire, Earth, Water, and Spirit with equal proficiency, a feat that is incredibly rare amongst channelers; most only being strong in one or two.
This, combined with the sheer strength of her channeling ability, allows Nynaeve to have some favorable skill in battle: whenever threatened in the early books she would call down lightning and spew fireballs with an ease most Accepted and even Aes Sedai would have trouble matching, once even instinctively using balefire, about which only a few living Aes Sedai even have knowledge.
In addition to being a great Healer and renowned Wisdom, she can also predict the weather both physical and metaphorical and has done this ever since she could remember. It is claimed by all Wisdoms, though most cannot. It is suspected that Doral Barran, the Wisdom to whom Nynaeve was apprenticed, could Listen to the Wind and was also a channeler as the two apprentices she picked were both with the spark inborn, and the one prior to Nynaeve died of the sickness that comes about when failing to learn to control the One Power.
Listening to the Wind is a form of Foretelling : it always tells her when trouble is about to arrive. As a Wisdom this "trouble" was bad weather, now it is human conflict she senses. Based on the intensity of the storm she feels coming, she can tell how great the conflict will be. Nynaeve also exhibits a minor version of Aviendha's ability to "read" ter'angreal and can feel emotions from them, though it is not necessarily an indication of what that ter'angreal does. For example, Nynaeve may feel great suffering from one the so called "sad bracelets" also known as Domination Band , but this does not mean that the ter'angreal brings about pain or suffering, but it may mean that it was once used or handled by one who felt those emotions.
It is unclear as to whether or not the object must be a ter'angreal , for Nynaeve felt emotions emanating also from one of the seals to the Dark One 's prison, and it is unclear as to the nature of that feeling. Lan gives Nynaeve the signet ring of the king of Malkier. When Moiraine absconded with several Two Rivers youths--specifically Rand al'Thor , his friends Mat Cauthon and Perrin Aybara , and Rand's childhood sweetheart and Nynaeve's apprentice Egwene al'Vere , Nynaeve, seeing that talks amongst the town council and womens circle about who to send after them were taking much too long, left to track them down and bring them back herself.
She seemed to think that she could face down an Aes Sedai and bring them home; she was wrong, and ended up getting swept up into the adventure with the rest. This set the tone for her relationship with Moiraine, and to some extent with Aes Sedai in particular--not only was Moiraine consistently riding rough-shod over Nynaeve, but she'd managed to ensnare Lan as well, whom Nynaeve was, quite against her will, starting to fall in love with, an attraction that was strongly returned.
Even worse, Moiraine identified Nynaeve as a wilder , someone who had independently learned to wield the One Power without training. Egwene was also identified as having ability to channel although she had not yet , but Moiraine wished to take her to Tar Valon for training and safety; not all who must learn to channel on their own survive the experience.
For Nynaeve, it was too late; she'd already learned how to integrate the ability into her skill as a healer, but due to her fears, she developed a mental block against the concept. Nynaeve was totally unable to channel unless extremely angry, something which later caused her no end of trouble. Nynaeve after joining the ranks of the Aes Sedai. At the Eye of the World , Rand discovered he could channel, and Moiraine claimed he was in fact the Dragon Reborn ; perhaps because of this, and to avenge herself of the perceived injustices wrought on her by Moiraine, Nynaeve eventually agreed to go to the Tower.
Once there, she was immediately promoted from Novice to Accepted by virtue of her sheer strength in the Power. She was also very old to enroll as a Novice according to Aes Sedai standards.
It was unheard of to completely bypass being a novice like this, and some Aes Sedai resented her for it. She is one of the strongest female channelers alive. Like Egwene and Elayne Trakand , she was tricked into going to Falme, ostensibly to help Rand, but really as part of a trap by Ishamael and the Seanchan ; Later, she, Egwene, and Elayne were assigned the task of hunting down the Black Ajah , a journey which took her far from the White Tower and her ostensible training as a future Yellow Ajah Aes Sedai.
It also took her farther and farther away from Lan, who she had developed feelings for, feelings he tried not to reciprocate due to his loyal service to Moiraine.
Before Lan leaves he gives his Golden Crane signet ring to her. She wears this around her neck at all times now. The clues the Black Ajah left in the Stone of Tear all pointed to the city of Tanchico ; Nynaeve and Elayne went, hoping that, if it was a trap, they'd have enough warning to escape it.
Egwene had instead decided to learn about Dreaming from the Aiel. While hunting for the Black sisters, Nynaeve happened upon Moghedien , one of the dreaded Forsaken. The two dueled, Nynaeve expecting unstoppable force at any moment The two were equally matched in terms of strength. Nynaeve managed to shield and bind Moghedien eventually through ingenuity rather than strength, but a Black Sister soon intervened and Moghedien disappeared in the intervening time.
With the Tower split over this turn of events, the group changed course and joined with the rebel Aes Sedai in Salidar , near Amador. Before arriving at Salidar, they encountered Galad Elayne's older half-brother whom they both feared because of his membership of the Whitecloaks and were forced to flee.
They joined Valan Luca 's traveling menagerie for a time, before running into Uno and, again, Galad. Nynaeve goes to try to get the bolt but it is already gone. Gawyn and Galad question the girls about where they have been but the girls won't say anything. Nyneave finally threatens them and they leave. Elaida catches the girls walking and questions them about what tey have been up to. After not getting any answers she questions them about Rand but is interrupted by Sheriam who summons the girls to watch the healing of Mat.
Nynaeve, Elayne, and Egwene go over all the information Verin provided them with about the Black Ajah. Else Grinwell shows up with a message for the girls from Siuan telling them where the stuff that Liandrin's group left behind is.
Egwene decides she will try to find more using her dream ter'angreal. After Egwene wakes up she shares her dreams with them. They decide they must go to Tear. In order for Mat to leave the city Nynaeve gives him one of the letter the Amyrlin gave them. After they share info they find out Else Grinwell was actually sent home 10 days past. Siuan tells the girls that there will be gold in their rooms for the trip and she will spread around the tale that they are going to hoe cabbage.
Nynaeve, Egwene, and Elayne are going down the Erinin river on the boat the Blue Crane when they hit a mud flat. After some debate they decide to walk to the next town and hopefully avoid brigands. She asks them to heal her friend Dailin. Nynaeve heals Dailin. Nynaeve heals Elayne. They peek outside and see three Fades. As they are peeking all of a sudden Aiel come out of nowhere and take down all the Trollocs and everyone but the Fades.
At this point the girls step out. Egwene lights the three fades on fire and Nynaeve balefires them. The Aiel escort the girls to the next city and then leave. Nynaeve and the girls arrive in Tear.
They don't want to stay at an inn because Liandrin's group might be looking for them. They see a wisdom's house so they stop there. She tells them about a thief catcher she knows who can help them. He leads her back to the Wisdom's house where Liandrin is waiting for her. They block her form Saidar and take her to the Stone. She wakes up and they are still blocked. She falls asleep again to try again but Mat shows up with Juilin to rescue them.
Nynaeve punches Amico and their shields are finally released. This section contains spoilers relating to The Shadow Rising. They are getting two different stories of threats and they are trying to convince Nynaeve to go to Tanchico. Then Moiraine walks in pissed off. After sending the darkfriends off she talks to Nynaeve and the girls about Rand, telling them she believes that he should attack Sammael in Illian.
She also tells them about a ter'angreal there in Tear that answers three questions and that they should focus on Tanchico. Lan comes in mad that Nynaeve didn't tell him she was going to Tanchico. He wants to come and protect her but she tells him he must stay with Moiraine.
He kisses her and storms out. Nynaeve seeks quick passage to Tanchico so she heads to an Atha'an Miere ship, the Wavedancer to ask for the Gift of Passage. After talking to Coine and Jorin and telling them about their hunt for the Black Ajah as well as giving them a note for gold the Atha'an miere agree to give them passage to help the Coramoor.
He says he can get them a place to stay. At the inn Elayne drinks and gets drunk. Nynaeve sticks her head ina bucket of water to wake sober her up. Afterwards Nynaeve goes to sleep with the ter'angreal. In The World of Dreams she goes to the Waster where she sees a man but Birgitte appears and tells her to leave saying the man will kill her if he sees her. She then goes to the Two Rivers. In the Two Rivers she follows who she thinks is Birgette around a corner and runs into someone who looks like Lan and tries to shoot her with a bow.
She barely avoids it and wakes up. Nynaeve and Elayne are walking down the street when they come accross someone who is trying to kidnap them. Egeanin shows up and helps them out but Elayne is sill forced to channel air to stop someone with a knife.
Afterwards they invite Egeanin back for tea. They drink tea and Egeanin questions them about Aes Sedai.
Thom shows up and starts talking and after he mentions Domon, Egeanin decides to leave. After Egeanin leaves Moghedien shows up and uses compulsion on Elayne and Nynaeve to find out what they are up to. Moghedien decides to let them be. He recognizes Egeanin and Egeanin swings at Domon. Elayne grabs them both with air then Domon explains that Egeanin is a Seanchan and was the captain of the ship that caught him. After they talk Domon tells them he found Liandrin's group and that they are staying at the Panarch 's palace.
Juilin arrives to give them the same info. Nynaeve enters The World of Dreams and meets the Wise ones. The Wise Ones tell her about need. She uses need and ends up in the Panarch's palace where the Black Sister Temaile has Amathera captive. She uses need again to escape. She also talks to Birgitte about Moghedien.
They encounter Temaile and shield her. Nynaeve runs into Mogedian they get into a power battle trying to block each other. Nynaeve throws the Domination Band at Moghedien, hits her in the head and uses the moment to slip a shield over Moghedien.
Moghedien runs and Nynaeve starts to chase her encounters Jeaine the Black Sister with the ter'angreal that shoots balefire. She shoots balefire a couple times and disappears in the chaos. Nynaeve is on her way to Amadicia with Thom, Juilin, and Elayne. They are stopped by Whitecloaks who are curious about Tarabon but convince them they are dye merchants and are sent on their way.
They decide to make camp near Mardecin. TFoH, Ch. After entering Mardecin Nynaeve notices a Yellow Ajah signal for an urgent message. They enter the shop where it is hanging which is a seamstress shop run by Ronde Macura. Ronde Macura ours them some tea and after they drink it they pass out.
Thom and Juilin rescue them. Upon questioning Ronde they discover that the Amyrlin has sent out messages for people to capture and restrain the runaway Accepted Elayne with whatever means necessary. They get into disguises and continue on their way towards Tar Valon. They continue on their way. They run into a circus run by Valan Luca who wants to put a show on for them but they give him a silver penny and continue on their way. They then investigate the study and find out that [Elaida]] is now Amyrlin.
After he leaves they meet up with Thom and Juilin and tell them they need to leave immediately. They offer him a nice sum of money and he accepts under the condition that they take parts in his show to which they agree. While there they recognize a Seanchan animal and find out the trainer Cerandin is Seanchan.
Nynaeve continues travelling with Valan Luca and they made their way to River Eldar. Meanwhile Nynaeve has begun being the target of Thom's throwing knives for the show. Birgitte takes them away and as they talk Moghedien appears. Mattin Stepaneos — b. If he was at least 20 at this time, then he is 63 at the youngest. As Elayne explains: We slow, Nynaeve. Somewhere between twenty and twenty-five, we begin aging more slowly. How much depends on how strong we are, but when doesn't. Any woman who can channel does it. The rate of slowing is set by the strength of the channeller, not the frequency or amount they channel.
When the effects of slowing are not restrained by use of the Oath Rod, aging continues, but at a much slower rate than for people who cannot use the Power. After slowing, it takes a number of years for an individual to age one apparent year.
The actual number of years to age one apparent year varies according to strength and also according to individuals. When a woman doesn't learn to channel until later in life, after the period when she would have slowed with early training, slowing takes on a different characteristic.
Instead of aging simply seeming to slow down, initially there is an apparent regression in age. A woman who began the process at 30 or 35 might find a regression of five years, rarely more, while a woman who began at 80 years of age might achieve a rollback of as much as 30 apparent years.
It could be less, but is rarely less than 20 years. This apparent age then becomes the base from which aging occurs. Since the age at which you begin channeling doesn't change the lifespan that a certain strength in the Power gives, this means that women of a given strength who began training later in life will take a longer period to age one apparent year than will women who began training, and slowed, at a younger age.
For example, Sharina Melloy can learn to channel and will do so with great strength, yet she will only slow now that she has begun to channel. Jordan has said that Sharina will lead a long life but not as a young woman. On his blog, he explained further: As an aside, I saw somewhere that I supposedly said that Sharina Melloy will not grow younger. If I did, then I misspoke. Sharina will not grow young, but she will grow younger in appearance, as will any other older women who begin to channel.
For Sharina, by way of example, she will "regress" into apparent middle age, but no younger. Translation: the menopause is not reversed. Male channellers also slow. The male Forsaken lived for centuries before they were sealed in the Bore.
While male channellers are stronger than female channellers, and therefore would slow more, the onset of slowing occurs later in males at around 30 or so; and women in general have longer lifespans than men. So it may well even out and they have about the same lifespans. In the Age of Legends: There are records of some Aes Sedai being considered barely middle-aged at three hundred years [Mesaana, for one said this], and some channelers may have lived seven hundred years or longer.
The oldest anywhere is a woman called Aloisia Nemosni, an oil merchant in Tear. Egwene, she's nearly six This is erroneous; the ageless look is due to the oaths Aes Sedai swear on the Oath Rod, as is their shortened lifespans. The Kin are aware that the stronger a channeller, the more slowly she ages and go to a great deal of trouble to hide their long lives from the general populace by moving to another country after some years have elapsed.
They assume that Aes Sedai live as long as damane. Ranking among Aes Sedai is based firstly on strength in the Power see Saidar Strength article , then on time spent training, and then on age. These are all inter-related, since the stronger the channeller, the longer she lives and the faster she usually trains.
Among Sitters, age and length of time in the Hall are the ranking criteria, although again, strength plays a part: the stronger the channeller, the more likely she will be promoted to important positions. By tradition the eldest Sitter made pronouncements from the Hall. Few are older, and younger girls are only taken if they have already begun to channel: Toveine hastily smoothed the sneer from her lips. Ignorant louts. The Tower accepted girls under fifteen only if they had already begun channeling.
True, some moved faster, even much faster. Siuan had. But she [Egwene] herself had been a novice less than a year, and Accepted an even shorter time. In this article, women of similar strength are assumed to have spent a similar length of time in training.
Aes Sedai with greying, grey or white hair are assumed to be over years old. Sitters who are the proper age not too young are assumed to have worn the shawl at least years before being raised Crossroads of Twilight, Secrets. She spent five years as a novice and five as Accepted.
