Can you camp at freeman park nc
Very high tides when I was here, up to the dunes at King Tide … I read up on the weather and the projected tides and thus had a great time! I did have to evac the campsite prior to checkout due to the tide, but just watched it roll in from a safe location. Best beach camp site anywhere! So thankful to have a beautiful and convenient place like this close by. Truly a rarity. Every night we are under the stars, with the waves crashing, we are so grateful to be able to camp here.
Always memorable and highly recommended. Lots of people complain about noise, but we came prepared this year! Ear plugs and eye masks did the trick. Thankfully all of our neighbors were chill this time and we didn't need the ear plugs. Wait until after mid Oct and your experience will be 5 stars too! The beach and area were nice and the weather was beautiful while we were there.
However, the people in the site next to ours were very loud and there was a lot of late night partying going on. People driving in and out all night long and yelling outside of our tent at am, made for a sleepless night for me, my husband, and our 9 year old son. Only saw a patrol once while we were there. Overall it was a great time camping at Freeman Par! I used to live at CB and had never been camping out there before.
I do wish that there was something about having a firepit or fire ring. We had to use our little weber grill because you can't burn wood in the sand anymore. I totally understand why but wish we would have known prior to going. We had a great time at Freeman Park. The large campsites were great and I love going to sleep with the sound of crashing waves. I almost gave it less stars simply because of the potra potties. They were nasty even though they were cleaned every morning.
The town may want to consider cleaning them multiple times a day when the park is busy. Sites are large. Porta johns or cleaned every morning but get gross quickly. Dont plan on sleeping if you go.. The campsite was pretty large and the view was beautiful.
Portojohns were disgusting, but this is camping. Very very very loud at night. People were partying and playing music in multiple campsites all night. More than 10 people set up opposite the campsites camping for free and being loud. There is no patrol after the park office is closed. People set up full tents on the ocean side at dark and were there still in the morning long after 8. It gets 3 stars because it is one of only a few areas in NC where camping and fires on the beach are allowed, and where 4x4s can drive on the beach.
However, it is not awesomely maintained, people can sneak in at night without paying for camping, and headlights and constant traffic yes, traffic on the very narrow driving area do not allow for a restful or quiet environment. It's like a big parking lot tailgate party, only it's on a beach. Enjoyed our stay for the most part. Camping space was different than in the past, which puts you much closer to the passing traffic. The beach shrinking and changing with the tides isn't helping that.
Neighbors to either side were quiet for the most part. Police did patrol through which is nice, except they asked us to take down one tent as it was deemed a bathroom. Some setups out there look like mini "houses". Wondering why we have to pay for camping when others were tent camping on ocean side. We camped 2 nights. When did this all change?? Crazy busy and wildly expensive. Not many beaches you can drive on and set up camp at! Oh, and the port-a-Johns are gross as hell. Beach is beautiful, but traffic in and out all night long.
Loud music until 2AM; 11PM quiet hour is merely a suggestion, not enforced. Loud music like being in a night club - not just someone playing mellow tunes at their site. There were lots is trucks still parked out overnight on the beach not in a camping spot and therefore camping for free. Reviews 1. Reviews 0. Next, put your vehicle into four-wheel drive and head on down the beach. There are trash cans and port-a-potties located periodically down the beach so there shouldn't be any lack of bathroom facilities or locations to dispose of your trash before you leave.
Once you leave the park be sure re-inflate your tires to their recommended PSI there are plenty of gas stations nearby with air fill up stations. This was my first beach-camping experience and driving on sand and I felt really comfortable out here cause of all the other campers. Knew if I'd have been stuck, plenty of folks would have been there to help. Theres an air pump just down the road for when you leave, too! Description Added by Robbie O'Donnell An attractive and secluded beach next to a classic old beach town with a mile and a half of prime beach camping spots facing the Atlantic. Season pass holders have been unable to access the beach at different points over the past two seasons due to high tides and overcrowding issues, and the town even stopped selling day passes to the park. The initial lawsuits were prompted when the Town of Carolina Beach sent out notices of condemnation to property owners at Freeman Park.
Their purpose was to inform them that the town hoped to take eight parcels of land for itself either through a private sale or eminent domain. That property remains undeveloped, and is only accessible through the neighboring land or the beach. Eventually, the town rescinded its attempt to take the land through eminent domain , but that has not stopped the landowners from counter-suing the town for its actions. Inverse condemnation action was taken against the town that challenges the rights the town has to establish a for-profit park on their private property.
Court documents, and the previous letter, show that property owners are also alleging the town has established campsites on their land. The lawsuits have been ongoing for years and will continue into at least. Recent filings in court show a trial date set for May of , however, that date could be pushed back once again. The town alleges it has done nothing wrong while property owners make several claims against the town and is requesting the court prohibit the town from operating Freeman Park on their private property.
The landowners claim the town has violated state law as well as the U. Constitution by operating the park on their land. The landowners also opposed the town using their property, albeit temporarily, for the purpose of beach nourishment projects.
In August of they proposed a solution that would have seen an easement swap. The landowners would have granted the town an easement to lay the pipes needed to move sand across the beach; in exchange, all the property owners asked for was an easement that would allow family members and heirs to the Freeman family access to a planned memorial on the private land.
While the Town Council considered the offer, no agreement was reached. This is part one of a three-part series looking into Freeman Park, how it came to be, and questions regarding the legal ownership of the land. In part two of this series we will explore the history of Freeman Park, and how it became the moneymaker for the town that it is today—and why it has been a controversial park since its official inception.
